If you are interested in getting involved with our Ambulance Unit please contact ([email protected]) who can have an informal chat with you about the Unit and invite you to one of our training sessions so that you can get a feel for what it is we do. Our Unit meets and trains every Wednesday evening. If after this you wish to become a member we can guide you through the process. There is a time commitment involved and the training can be difficult for some as we require a high level of involvement and skill level due to the nature of our service, however it is a very rewarding experience.
To become involved with Red Cross activities, you must first become an Irish Red Cross member. You can visit the Irish Red Cross website for more information and also download the attached application form at the end of this page. The annual registration for membership is €10 and covers insurance and training. As a member of the Irish Red Cross, you can then apply to a branch in your area to join. Ours is the Cork City Branch and is based in Turners Cross. Once you receive your membership number and have joined the branch you will be able to volunteer with our Unit. While you can start learning new skills, making new friends and become involved with our branch activities, you will not be able to observe on an ambulance until you have been Garda vetted and received Child Protection training.
If you are under 18 years old please visit our Irish Red Cross Youth Section Page.
As a member of the Irish Red Cross you will be part of the world's largest humanitarian organisation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). With 190 national societies across the globe and 17 million volunteers, the IFRC responds before, during and after disasters and health emergencies to improve the lives of vulnerable people. The Red Cross does this voluntarily and without any discrimination, including but not only for nationality, race, class, religious or political beliefs. The IFRC was founded in 1919 in Paris but is now based in Geneva, Switzerland where it oversees and coordinates national societies and provides support during disaster relief, crisis management, community recovery, risk reduction, health development programmes, refugee migration, humanitarian logistics and diplomacy.
